Freedom Theatre: Roger Waters Produces Documentary on the Jenin Refugee Camp Theater as a Symbol of Cultural Resistance

We spoke to you about Roger Waters just a few days ago, to tell you that he was among the signatories of the Venice4Palestine collective’s appeal, which calls for concrete actions to defend Palestine, such as “the suspension of agreements with entities and institutions tied to the Israeli government, the creation of safeguards for professionals who choose to dissociate themselves from such ties and the display of the Palestinian flag for the duration of the Festival, on the occasion of the official selection of the two Palestinian films Al Mowaten Osama by Ahmed Hassouna and Hiwar ma’ albahr by Muayad Alayan.” Today we also learn that the singer, bassist and one of the founders of Pink Floyd will also support the culture of the Arab country at war with Israel. He will do so by taking on the role of executive producer of a second work: a documentary titled Freedom Theatre directed by Palestinian filmmaker Rishi Pelham. Described as “an immersive and sensory portrait of a man,” the film centers on the Palestinian resistance fighter and artist Ahmed Tobasi, who, in the Jenin refugee camp, relentlessly battles for the survival of the theatre that gives the project its title, threatened with destruction despite its function as a community and cultural center. Speaking about the documentary, the director explained:

Non avevo intenzione di fare questo film. Continuavo a tornare nel campo di Jenin, al teatro, poi di nuovo al campo, e mi rendevo conto che questa storia aveva bisogno di essere raccontata. Quello che mi ha convinto è stata la tensione fra due mondi: la scatola nera dove si fanno le prove, chiusa e sotto controllo, e l’esterno del campo: vivo, sfuggente e impossibile da circoscrivere. Piano piano questi spazi hanno cominciato a fondersi.

Ci sono voluti 5 anni per girare Freedom Theatre, che è attualmente in fase di postproduzione. Sicuramente al film gioverà il sostegno di Roger Waters, non tanto in termini economici ma di popolarità. In fondo è questo che gli artisti famosi dovrebbero fare: prendersi a cuore una battaglia, parlarne e sostenerla, portando dalla sua parte più persone possibile. Il team produttivo del docu­mentario sarà al Festival di Venezia, dove presenterà il progetto nella speranza di avere una distribuzione internazionale.

Rishi Pelham si è anche occupato della colonna sonora di Freedom Theatre, che raccoglie brani di famosi musicisti e cantanti palestinesi, a cominciare dalla DJ Techno e produttrice Samaʼ Abdulhadi, conosciuta come la “regina della scena techno palestinese”.
