From Carrie to Eleven: Mike Flanagan Reveals the Hidden Link to Stranger Things

Even before its streaming debut on Prime Video, Carrie captured the public’s attention and some quickly proposed a parallelism between the new streaming title and Stranger Things. Both, after all, feature a teenage protagonist, but while the first originated on paper from Stephen King’s pen, the second grew from an idea by the Duffer brothers and was later released on Netflix for five seasons. Later transformed into a horror miniseries at the request of Mike Flanagan, Carrie is among the October streaming additions on Prime Video, and it was Flanagan himself who recently addressed the comparison with Stranger Things and Eleven.

Carrie: Mike Flanagan addresses the comparisons with Stranger Things and Eleven

To date, Carrie remains one of the most beloved novels in Stephen King’s career. This story has been adapted to the screen several times, but the most recent version is precisely the Prime Video one. Born as a miniseries, Carrie is available for streaming from October 7, 2026, starring a very young Summer H. Howell.

Mike Flanagan, who knows his way around horror, told Screen Rant in an interview that during the making of Carrie the comparison to Stranger Things and Eleven surfaced: “For me it makes no sense to try to redo what has already been done, but this meant taking into account not only the previous adaptations, but also, as you said, Eleven and other characters who are clearly heavily influenced by Carrie White. So yes, I thought about it all the time.” Like Carrie, Eleven in Stranger Things also wields telekinetic powers, and the creators of Netflix’s series have never hidden the inspiration behind Eleven, which indeed came from Carrie White. In Stranger Things, however, Eleven’s powers are the result of scientific experiments and not of supernatural origin.

The plot of Carrie follows the teenager, who has spent her life in isolation, enrolling in the local high school after her father’s death and confronting a new and frightening environment, while something inside her awakens. Faced with a new setting and a bullying scandal, Carrie discovers she possesses telekinetic powers destined to unleash chaos and destruction.
