From FBI Agent to Mode Icon: The Secret Plan to Disrupt Ugly Betty’s Debut

Perhaps not everyone knows that Ugly Betty began life as a remake of the 1999 Colombian telenovela titled Yo soy Betty, la fea. Exactly twenty years have passed since the TV debut of Ugly Betty with America Ferrera in the lead, but could you imagine the same character as… a spy? This was the initial idea considered by showrunner Silvo Horta, yet when it was brought to the Studios, the response was silence.

Ugly Betty, What If She Had Been an Undercover Agent? The Showrunner’s Rejected Idea

Betty Suarez, portrayed by America Ferrera, is a young, ambitious woman who becomes an assistant at the prestigious glamour magazine MODE and fights to advance while contending with prejudice and the industry’s obstacles. But at first, her story could have taken a completely different path, leaning toward espionage. If it had depended on showrunner Silvo Horta, Betty would likely have become a perfect undercover agent, but the Studios did not approve the idea.

The showrunner had envisioned a version of Betty as an FBI agent undercover at MODE, but that revised take was not received positively, as he recalled during Ugly Betty’s reunion at the ATX Television Festival in Austin, Texas, in 2016: “I didn’t receive any response,” he revealed to The Hollywood Reporter. Subsequently the executive producers Ben Silverman and Teri Weinberg came back to him with an explanation: “Look, we think what was done originally worked, so stick with that. Don’t back down.”

In 2025, Teri Weinberg revisited the topic during an interview on the podcast Viva Betty: An Ugly Betty Rewatch, recalling Horta’s proposal: “He said, ‘Listen, I grew up with this telenovela. My mother watched it when I was a child. And I loved it; it’s in my blood. This is my life. A big idea came to me: I want Betty to be an undercover FBI agent, and that’s how we’ll get her into MODE. She will investigate some illicit activities within MODE.’ Ben and I are two chatters; we never stop talking, but on that occasion we were speechless. We weren’t in the same room, and I don’t think either of us knew what to say or do. So we told him: ‘You know, uh, no.’ First of all, no. And then again no. And then we added: ‘But think it through, because we care about you and we know you can pull it off.’”

That choice, perhaps, turned out to be a stroke of luck, because Ugly Betty resonated strongly with audiences on the small screen. Spanning four seasons, it earned 19 nominations at the Emmy Awards, triumphing in 2007 in the category of Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, with the award going to America Ferrera.
