Not all on-set special effects have been replaced by post-production visual effects, but it is undeniable that, compared to the 1980s and the early 1990s, many elements are now created in CGI. Those like veteran Phil Tippett, a two-time Oscar winner, relied on sophisticated builds and frame-by-frame stop-motion animation, as an heir to Ray Harryhausen, and have decided to close his historic studio, auctioning via EstateSales.org some relics from the studio, but not all. Is it the end of a career? Almost.

The assault and the subsequent battle against the AT-AT in The Empire Strikes Back, with those armored units so mammoth-like or elephant-like, stands as one of the peaks of Phil Tippett’s career and his studio. Particularly specialized in stop-motion but not only, he brought the vision of directors to life right on the set, marrying technology and fascinating craftsmanship: even though, together with his colleagues, he won the Oscar only for The Return of the Jedi and Jurassic Park (there was a mix of animatronics and CGI there), Tippett touched many other iconic works from past decades. We can cite Star Wars, The Dragon of the Lake of Fire, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, Willow, RoboCop, Dragonheart and recently the Twilight saga. Tippett had already had to sell the studio to PhantomFX in 2024, exactly forty years after its founding, but this did not avert an unsustainable financial situation, generating one of many “difficult decisions,” as he told CBS News, such as putting up for auction last Saturday and Sunday pieces from his laboratory, used in those films. “Sometimes a twinge of remorse strikes me, but I wouldn’t know where to put them. And I don’t like taking work home. [I’ll keep the Oscars], they were the most meaningful part of my journey.” The journey, however, is not over: given that at 74 years old, Phil has found time to work on The Mandalorian & Grogu, he will remain at disposal: “I will die with the sword in my hand.”
