Emmy Rossum is back on television. Following the success of Shameless and The Crowded Room with Tom Holland, the actress has taken on a leading role in Furious, a gripping thriller streaming on Disney+ whose latest episode may have left viewers with more questions than answers. In light of this, Emmy Rossum shared her thoughts on the matter and championed the idea of a second season.
Furious, Emmy Rossum confronts the twist in the finale centered on Alice
Created by Elizabeth Meriwether (New Girl), Furious follows the story of FBI agent Alice Black as she trails a serial killer who targets wealthy men and, before killing them, administers fentanyl. Over time, the arcs of Alice and Catherine become increasingly intertwined, a development that is underscored by the finale of the first season, which Rossum addresses head-on. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the lead revisits what happened, and readers are advised to keep reading only after finishing the first season in its entirety.
Alice relentlessly pursues Catherine across the season with the help of Nora, who leads the FBI’s sexual crimes unit, yet their efforts to build a case against the billionaire Jay Easton are thwarted by another FBI agent, Ed George, who is tied to the organization. In the penultimate episode, Danny reveals that he received a USB drive from Alden containing thousands of videos, and one of them features Alice. Did the person in the video know? Emmy Rossum confirms: “Alice knew there was a video. I don’t think she realized how widely it had been viewed. Her gaze is fixed on the control panel by the door Nora uses in the first episode. She wants to enter that room. And then, when Danny mentions that there is a recording, she sees how potentially far-reaching this has become. That’s why I think she freezes and shuts down in that moment.”
By the end of the penultimate episode, Alice confronts Catherine and explains that Easton will die in his bed, peacefully: “I think she wants Jay Easton to face justice. I still believe she doesn’t think vigilante justice is the answer. I certainly don’t think she wants Catherine to be hurt, but she isn’t yet sure what she intends to do about the video,” Rossum added. This moment ties into what happens in the finale when Catherine approaches the Easton home with a calculated plan that involves Emma, Jay’s daughter and her accomplice. The confrontation, however, devolves into violence when Emma shoots Catherine, wounding her but not stopping her.
Upon her arrival, Alice asks Catherine to drop the weapon before the police and the FBI arrive, but Catherine remains steadfast, demanding explanations about Isabel’s fate. From that verbal clash, a new realization dawns for Alice: “Although she has grown incredibly strong, powerful, capable, and adept at chasing down killers and confronting them on her own, she’s still afraid. She’s afraid of many of the people around her. She’s afraid of what happened to her as a child. And the bond she forms with Catherine starts to change her at that very moment. She begins to feel a sense of loyalty toward her, a feeling she doesn’t experience in the ordinary offices where she usually works,” the actress revealed.
Alice faces Jay: what will happen in the second season?
In the end, Catherine recollects what happened the night Isabel died, the moment that sparked her method for getting rid of powerful men, while meanwhile Alice confronts Jay and ends up killing him. “We all have a dark side. We all have a monstrous side. We all wonder whether we could do something like that, what it would take. I think Alice has suppressed and buried a great deal. She swallows all of her anger, whereas Catherine, in a sense, vomits it, explodes it everywhere, and destroys everything she encounters, except Alden.” Rossum clarified that, in her view, Alice hadn’t planned to kill him but rather to hand him over to justice. Then Jay recognized her, and the situation spiraled out of control.
In the final moments of the episode, Alice finds herself with Danny, and that romantic connection between them could resurface in the second season? “We know he’s considering retirement or leaving the force. I imagine that has been a key part of his identity and hers as well. They couldn’t be together because of his complicated relationship with Marshall and his marriage, and now, suddenly, they might be, but he’s also processing the fact that he cannot completely guard who she is and her secrets, now that he has seen the video and glimpsed part of it. So I think it’s really complicated, and I find it fascinating to watch the human weight all of this carries for him, the potential partner of someone who has been a victim of violence and sexual violence,” she added.
The second season of Furious has already been greenlit, but Emmy Rossum has no idea what lies ahead. For instance, will Emma pay for her sins? “I think even if it doesn’t happen, she will have to live with the memory of each of those girls she helped put into a luxury car and whose bruises she witnessed for the rest of her life.” And regarding Alice, will she investigate everyone who downloaded her video? “I don’t know. I think whatever we can imagine today will be different because Liz is so brilliant that she’ll come up with something truly, truly interesting—whatever it may be,” she concluded.
