What will become of the Game of Thrones universe? Will there be more stories after House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms? Casey Bloys, CEO of HBO and Max Content, recently addressed the matter, speaking at the Emmy Awards 2026 and sharing some details about the future of Westeros on the small screen.
Will the Westeros TV Universe Expand? HBO’s CEO Tempering the Enthusiasm of Game of Thrones Fans
After eight seasons of Game of Thrones, HBO introduced House of the Dragon, the first prequel focused on the Dance of the Dragons that brought about the downfall of the Targaryen family, a storyline whose ending is drawing near. After three seasons, the fourth has long been touted as the finale, which will reveal the conclusion of the civil war between the Targaryens and those who will ultimately sit on the Iron Throne. In the meantime, HBO has also rolled out another spin-off prequel, this time centered on the tales of Dunk and Egg, titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Following the first season’s debut in 2026, Dunk and Egg will return for a second season with Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell once again in the leading roles.
But what does the future hold for this universe? Now that House of the Dragon is nearing its conclusion and the adventures of Dunk and Egg may or may not continue after season two, audiences are left wondering what will become of Westeros, at least on television. We do know, however, that Aegon the Conqueror has received the green light for a highly anticipated prequel film on the big screen, which will recount the unification of the Seven Kingdoms.
Regarding the television universe launched by Game of Thrones, Casey Bloys tackled the fate of Westeros in a interview with Deadline, and his words may not sit well with fans. When asked whether there are other spin-off projects in the works, the HBO CEO replied: “Are you asking about Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Emmy-nominated, which will arrive in the first half of 2027? And House of the Dragon? Beyond that, no, nothing else.”
Bloys’ answer comes amid rumors of a possible return of Maisie Williams in the role of Arya Stark, potentially with a sequel project that would follow Arya on a new adventure after the events of the main series. In the meantime, fans still hope for another sequel spin-off, the one dedicated to Jon Snow, which was ultimately scrapped.
