Gatekeepers: We’ve Been Defrauding Evil Since 1996 — A New Comedy by Eros Puglielli Starring Lillo, Featuring a Fake Medium

Filming has begun in Calabria, in the Cosenza area, for the new comedy by Eros Puglielli GATEKEEPERS, Tricking Evil Since 1996. The irresistibly charismatic leads are Lillo, Frank Matano, Paolo Calabresi and Asia Argento, who are joined by Massimo De Lorenzo and Salvatore Costa. The screenplay is the work of the same Puglielli, of Giulia Gianni and of Matteo Menduni. The cinematography is by Andrea Arnone, the production design by Alessandro Bigini, the costumes by Monica Celeste, the editing by Angelo Santini and the original music by Francesco Cerasi.

Produced by Be Water Film, Solaria Film and Vision Distribution, in collaboration with Sky, GATEKEEPERS tells the story of Ruggero and Leone, who swindle the gullible with fake séances. When they recruit a frail old lady as the new medium, they encounter a demon that launches a terrible curse on Leone. With the Apocalypse looming, the two scoundrels will have to save the world. The problem is that they have absolutely no idea how they will manage to do it. The film’s production, which will arrive in cinemas with Vision Distribution, will wrap in Rome.

Eros Puglielli and Lillo Petrolo: a top-notch collaboration

GATEKEEPERS, Tricking Evil Since 1996 is not the first collaboration between Eros Puglielli and Lillo, aka Pasquale Petrolo. The film of their first time together was Gli idoli delle donne (2022), the most carefree comedy among the director’s previous works, who had debuted with the fantasy comedy Dorme, which became a genuine cult. In addition to Lillo, the cast included Greg, Corrado Guzzanti, Ilaria Spada and Francesco Arca. The following year, the director and actor collaborated on the entertaining 15-episode TV series Sono Lillo, followed, in 2024, by the feature Cortina Express, which winked at the classic cinepanettone by pairing Lillo with Christian De Sica and Paolo Calabresi. The latest artistic collaboration between the comedian and Puglielli was the recent Agatha Christian – Delitto sulle nevi, which besides being led by De Sica and Calabresi, also tapped into the flair of Maccio Capatonda. Finally, we note that we are awaiting Spie per caso – Missione Tokyo, a parody of a spy movie in which Lillo and Christian De Sica are two former secret agents sent to Japan by MM (Mara Maionchi), head of the secret services, to recover software capable of making reality and AI-generated content indistinguishable. In the cast, Paolo Calabresi is also present. Returning to television, after Sono Lillo, Eros Puglielli directed Gigolò per caso, in which he reunited Christian De Sica and worked with Pietro Sermonti.
