Today Gilmore Girls is a cornerstone of television, whose longevity has been addressed recently by Alexis Bledel, who for years portrayed the young Rory Gilmore. Interviewed by the New York Times, which proposed the list of the best 100 TV series of the twenty-first century, Alexis Bledel recalled the support she received from the fans: “I started working on Gilmore Girls when I was 18, so I’m very grateful. I appreciate that the fans followed us as we evolved and grew into our roles.”
Alongside Lauren Graham, who for years played her television mother, Alexis Bledel introduced the audience to her Rory, a sixteen-year-old with very clear ideas about her future, navigating difficult choices and matters of the heart. The stories unfolded mainly in Stars Hollow, a fictional Connecticut town that has become one of TV’s most beloved locations. Across seven seasons and a revival offered by Netflix in 2016, Rory had three main romantic interests: Dean, Jess and Logan, played respectively by Jared Padalecki, Milo Ventimiglia and Matt Czuchry.
Reflecting on the success of Gilmore Girls, the actress admitted: “There are many timeless elements in this series. The rapid-fire dialogue, reminiscent of classic films from the 1930s and ’40s. Teenage anxieties are timeless. The life of a single mother, the romantic scenes, the multigenerational family dramas. I believe this is what keeps people coming back to watch it.” Created by Amy Sherman-Palladino, the series ran from 2000 to 2007 and then returned with a revival in 2016.
In the New York Times list, Gilmore Girls placed at number 99 in the 100-title ranking, preceded by others such as Dexter (88), Modern Family (77), Ted Lasso (75), Beef (71) and The Handmaid’s Tale (67), where Alexis Bledel also appeared. The actress, for her part, revealed that her personal favorites on the list are Black Mirror, The Crown, Downton Abbey, Fleabag, My Brilliant Friend, Normal People, Succession, Veep and Orphan Black.
