Gilmore Girls: Filming Underway for HBO Max Special Documentary

Before the decade ends, we will have one final gathering with the beloved protagonists of ‘Gilmore Girls’. HBO Max has announced the production of a very special documentary about the making of the original series, with Bonni Cohen at the helm, in partnership with Warner Horizon Unscripted Television and the This Machine label, directed by R.J. Cutler.

One of the familiar faces involved in the project will be the creator of the series, Amy Sherman-Palladino, who takes the opportunity with pride to spotlight her work in the 2000s. She will be joined by executive producer Daniel Palladino and the iconic actress Lauren Graham, who will remind us of those happy times together with numerous other cast members who helped bring the seven seasons of the show to life.

The women who defined an entire generation on television in the 2000s will return to remember their work on ‘Las chicas Gilmore’ (Warner Bros.)

More Gilmore on the Way

This documentary, which aims to show how it surpassed all the expectations placed on it to become a project of international scope, will review the eight years of its life that set a new standard in television series. It won’t be the only work revisiting the early years of the production, as a book written by Amy Sherman-Palladino and Lauren Graham is also in the works, which will delve into what we didn’t see behind the scenes of the show, with a release date set for fall 2027.

This is as close as we’ll get to a sequel of the series in quite some time, though fortunately we have one from 2016 known here as ‘The Four Seasons of the Gilmore Girls’. That Netflix-produced miniseries served as an epilogue ten years after the end of the original series and can still be watched on its platform, while the rights to the original episodes switch from one producer to another. Currently we can find it on Disney+.

The move to produce a documentary about ‘Gilmore Girls’ for HBO Max lands a little surprisingly, though it shouldn’t. The series originally aired on The WB and The CW, both owned by Warner Bros. Although distribution rights have fluctuated a lot over the past decade, the origins of the franchise lie in Warner, and it is therefore up to them as well to nurture the legend around it.
