This year, during the 83rd edition of the Venice Film Festival, Nanni Moretti will receive the SIAE Andrea Purgatori Career Award for 2026. The Italian Society of Authors and Publishers, Main Sponsor of the 23rd edition of the Giornate degli Autori, returns to support and promote cinema made in Italy. The SIAE Award to Moretti will be presented on Sunday, September 6 at 11:00, at the Sala Perla of the Palazzo del Casinò, by the President of SIAE Salvatore Nastasi. The latter stated:
In the fiftieth anniversary of his cinematic debut, SIAE confers upon Nanni Moretti the SIAE Andrea Purgatori Career Award for the extraordinary contribution offered to cinema and to the culture of our country. Beginning with Io sono un autarchico, Moretti has managed to build a work unique in the Italian and international landscape, transforming personal experience into a tool for observing reality and society. Through a profoundly original gaze, often autobiographical and always capable of questioning the present, he has told the transformations of Italy, its anxieties, its contradictions and its hopes. With an unmistakable stylistic signature, grounded in self-irony, critical intelligence, narrative rigor and expressive freedom, he has given life to characters, images and dialogues that have rooted themselves in our memory and in society. His cinema has managed to combine civil commitment and lightness, reflection and humor, private dimension and collective storytelling, always keeping alive the attention to the value of artistic creation and the freedom of the author.

Nanni Moretti is an author who certainly does not need introductions. That he deserves a career award is beyond question and his films have decisively entered into myth, especially the early ones. What followed was gradually a cinema less egocentric, even if sometimes autobiographical and more melancholic, as demonstrated by Mia madre and, in its own way, Habemus Papam. Moretti established himself at once in the global spotlight with his debut feature Io sono un autarchico, released in 1976. In 1978 came Ecce Bombo, a film that became a symbol of the post-1968 generation, following the disorganized days of university student Michele and his friends, who indulge in conversations about the meaning of life, dedicate arias of opera to old flames, seek emancipation but remain prisoners of bourgeois remnants, and watch the dawn from the “wrong side.” Ecce Bombo, which marked the director’s first appearance at the Cannes Film Festival, was followed by four films that earned important recognitions at major film festivals and three films that, although not competing internationally, marked fundamental milestones in the auteur’s career. In 1981 Sogni d’oro received the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival. La messa è finita (1985) won the Silver Bear – Grand Jury Prize at the Berlin Film Festival. Caro diario (1993) earned the Best Director prize at Cannes, where in 2001 La stanza del figlio won the Palme d’Or. In 1989 came Palombella Rossa, the last film in which the character Michele Apicella appears, dealing with the ideological crisis of the Italian left at the end of the two blocs. It is the 1998 film Aprile, where the director, who plays himself, speaks about the birth of his son. After La stanza del figlio, Moretti directed Il Caimano (2006), in which a producer wrestles with a film about Silvio Berlusconi, while in 2011 one of the director’s great masterpieces arrived: the Habemus Papam in which a Pope faced with difficulties is played by an incredible Michel Piccoli. The film wins several national prizes and participates in the Cannes Festival just as its successor Mia madre. In 2021 he brought to theaters Tre piani, adapted from the novel of Eshkol Nevo, and in 2023 Nanni Moretti rejoined Margherita Buy in Il sol dell’avvenire, where he plays a director. Completing Moretti’s filmography are the sublime Bianca (1984), again with Michele Apicella, and the multi-award-winning documentary Santiago, Italia (2018).
At the Venice Festival, which starts the day after tomorrow, September 2, and runs until the 12th, Moretti brings in competition Succederà questa notte.
