No longer is imagination needed to picture how life will be for our favorite girls ten years from now. The days of speculation and dreaming about seeing them again are over, because today we are greeted with fantastic news: HBO rescues the series ‘Girls’. Ten years after its original finale, the streaming platform bets on a new special season that will be composed of five episodes, and nothing more.
This sequel will be limited and will not extend into further seasons, Lena Dunham has confirmed in a video she used as the grand announcement of the show’s return. Of course, its creator will come back to oversee the production of these new stories and as one of the main actresses, resuming the role of Hannah. Judd Apatow will also return as executive producer to finish what began in 2012. One person who will not be returning to work on the series for the moment is Jenni Konner, one of the original showrunners.
Returning cast
Beyond Dunham, who created the show itself, the rest of the main girls will return to complete the story alongside her. Allison Williams as Marnie, Jemima Kirke as Jessa, Zosia Mamet as Shoshanna, and of course Andrew Rannells will return as Elijah. There is no apparent confirmation yet for Adam Driver, who, despite being Hannah’s main love interest in the past, may be absent from the new storyline they will tell.
The production of these five new episodes will begin in 2027, with no concrete premiere date projected; it could be either in the same year or the following one. It will be extra waiting beyond the tenth anniversary of the end of season six, but it should be worth waiting for the perfect moment to see the group back together again.
HBO, the revivalist
The network HBO is very interested in revivals lately. Just a few days ago they announced a sequel series for ‘Crazy Rich Asians’, which will likewise take the form of a series and we can expect it next year. The streaming platform seems to be betting big on this nostalgia-driven approach and on the opportunity to tell what happens after the end of some great series, all while they gear up for their biggest bet of 2026: the reboot of ‘Harry Potter’.
