Musical fans, rejoice. A new series of ‘Glee’ has officially been greenlit, Hulu and Disney+ have confirmed. This set of episodes is categorized as a reboot rather than a direct seventh season picking up from the original finale in 2015, though in those terms we might not need to imagine a complete reimagining. Ryan Murphy will lead the series.
Not only is the show back, but additional reports insist that its lead will also take part in the new ‘Glee’. The character of Rachel Berry will return to performing publicly through Lea Michele, who would come back to the series that basically launched her television career back in 2009. And beware, because it might not be the only original cast member to return: Heather Morris and Chord Overstreet would also be back if we trust their social media posts, which hint that the team is gathering once again.
Reboot or Sequel
Beyond the confirmation that ‘Glee’ is back, official details about what form this reboot will take are scarce. The ending we knew turned out to be a fairly definitive closure to the story built over six seasons, with a time jump into the future to see how the characters had evolved and what their fate would be after their years as part of the school’s choir at McKinley. If the series wants to continue, it will have to do so while taking into account everything that was shown back then.
Ryan Murphy had already hinted on several occasions that he had contacted multiple members of the original cast who would be willing to return, so perhaps it isn’t just the three actors mentioned who will come back.
Celebration
‘Glee’ has always been a series warmly embraced by audiences, with millions of viewers following its plot episode by episode. Its relevance today remains strong thanks to albums, reimagined takes on classic pop songs, and revivals of the show that celebrate fans around the world. On Spotify alone there is an average of 4.1 million users per month listening to music from the show, according to Variety data.
