Gleeks, take note, because this time it could really be the right one. More than fifteen years after Glee’s debut, the idea of reviving the musical series that rapidly became a cult has begun to feel like something much more concrete. Creator Ryan Murphy has, in fact, revealed that he has just finished a new screenplay together with Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan, the writers who co-authored the first two seasons of the show. The news arrives after months of rumors about a possible reboot and definitively rekindles fans’ hopes. For now there is no officially announced production or a release date for the return to television, but at least one element already exists: a script.
The Return of Glee: Ryan Murphy Has Just Finished the Screenplay
The same Murphy confirmed that something is indeed cooking, revealing to Entertainment Tonight that he had just finished the screenplay an hour before the interview. The project was written together with Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan, the two writers who had accompanied Murphy in drafting the early seasons of Glee. So there would be a desire to return to the show’s origins from a creative standpoint as well. Murphy, though, clarified that the project is still in a preliminary stage. The screenplay has not yet been read by the cast. The creator explained that he intends to write at least a couple of episodes before understanding how the actors might react and what direction the project could concretely take.
Could the Original Cast Return?
And this is where the most interesting part comes in. Murphy said he has already been in contact with about ten members of the original cast. “They were all nice and they each had lots of questions, but they were all very excited about the idea,” the screenwriter assured. It does not necessarily mean that everyone has already agreed to participate, since no one has read the new screenplay yet, but dialogue with part of the cast has already begun. The idea of a reunion, therefore, no longer seems to be just fan fantasy. However, it remains to be seen what form the involvement of the original actors could take and how much space they might have within a potential new story.
Anche Lea Michele pronta a tornare?
Among the people who have already publicly expressed their affection for Glee is Lea Michele, who portrayed Rachel Berry for all six seasons of the series. Just a few days ago, the actress spoke about the possibility of a reboot, saying she would be willing to return. Michele reiterated how Glee still holds a special place in her heart and expressed her enthusiasm for a potential new project led by Murphy. “I love it. I would follow it anywhere,” the actress had stated.
In What Form Could the New Glee Arrive?
The idea of a new Glee had already emerged in Murphy’s statements last July. On that occasion, the writer explained that he had been struck by the renewed interest from younger generations in the original series. The show, in fact, has found a second life thanks to viewers who discovered it years after its initial broadcast. Hence Murphy’s own question: why not consider a new version of Glee? The hypothesis would not be about simply re-proposing the same stories episode after episode. One possibility under consideration was to tell a new generation of students, while preserving the spirit of the Glee Club and perhaps returning to William McKinley High School, the symbolic setting of the series. The new project could thus combine fresh characters with familiar faces, creating a bridge between the show’s past and its future.
At the moment there is no order for a new series, but certainly the existence of a screenplay is already a significant step forward. We will see how things evolve. One thing is certain: after years of rumors and speculation, the reboot (or perhaps we should say sequel) of Glee finally has something very concrete behind it. And if Ryan Murphy keeps his promise to further develop the story, for Gleeks it could really be time to sing together again.
