Now we know what the Mirror of Erised will show Harry Potter during his first year at Hogwarts. HBO has announced three prominent additions to the cast of Harry Potter, the eagerly anticipated TV series based on J.K. Rowling’s celebrated fantasy novels. Jasper Talbot (Broadchurch) and Hannah Chinn (Domina) have secured the roles of James and Lily Potter, Harry’s parents, while Harry Gilby (The Last Kingdom) will portray Charlie Weasley, one of Ron’s brothers.
Harry Potter: the New Additions to the TV Series Cast
As readers of the books and fans of the previous film adaptation will know, James and Lily Potter were killed by Lord Voldemort when Harry was still an infant. It is for this reason that Harry (played by Dominic McLaughlin) was raised by his aunt Petunia and uncle Vernon, bearing on his forehead the scar from that encounter, which he managed to survive thanks to the loving protection of his parents. In the films, the two characters were brought to life by Adrian Rawlins and Geraldine Somerville.
Charlie Weasley, on the other hand, is a wizard who attended Hogwarts just like his younger brother Ron (Alastair Stout). The second son of Molly and Arthur Weasley (Katherine Parkinson and Rafe Spall, the latter appearing in the cast from the second season), and brother to Bill, Percy (Ruari Spooner), Fred (Tristan Harland), George (Gabriel Harland) and Ginny (Gracie Cochrane and, from the second season, Bonnie Hill), Charlie does not appear in the films, except in a family photo.
Streaming on HBO Max from December 25, the first season of Harry Potter will adapt the events of the series’ first novel, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Harry is a boy who seems unremarkable—at least that is what his aunt Petunia claims. But when a mysterious letter inviting him to the School of Witchcraft and Wizardry Hogwarts arrives, the doors swing open to a hidden world of magic, friendship, and adventure. Yet behind the walls of Hogwarts lie dark secrets. Harry will need the courage to test himself against the most malevolent of all wizards.
