Harry Potter: Paapa Essiedu Defends Snape Role Amid Controversy, Promises More Depth

The new Severus Snape has no intention of letting himself be distracted by the debates surrounding his entry into the Harry Potter universe. Paapa Essiedu is aware that his casting has divided a part of the audience, but he is clear about what he wants to bring to the screen: a character rich in nuance, contradictions, and above all humanity. Meanwhile, in a recent interview, the actor reiterated his stance in favor of trans rights, placing himself at odds with author J.K. Rowling.

Paapa Essiedu wants to show a new side of Severus Snape

In an interview with Time, the actor directly addressed the reactions sparked by his participation in the series. Essiedu recalled his personal connection to the saga, initially encountered through the novels. “Personally, I approached this story through the books. So, people have very different opinions about it. Of course, everyone has the right to their own opinion on any subject,” he said very diplomatically. He does not appear to intend to enter into a continual clash with those who question his casting. His response has been to refocus attention on the character and the work that lies ahead. Essiedu continued: “I focus on the work in front of me, which is to give as much humanity, depth, dimension, nuance, and complexity as possible to a character who already has plenty of these. This is my job, and it is a privilege and an honor to do it, and I can’t wait to be able to do it for a long time.” His statement shifts the debate from the actor’s skin color to the narrative possibilities of a new television adaptation. The series, in fact, will have more room than the films to develop the plots of the novels and to deepen the characters who populate Hogwarts.

Support for trans rights and divergences with J.K. Rowling

The issue threads the casting of the series with the debate over J.K. Rowling’s positions on transgender people. Essiedu, who in the past has publicly spoken in favor of their rights, thus finds himself part of a project tied to an author with whom he does not share certain beliefs. In 2025, J.K. Rowling had supported the British Supreme Court ruling recognizing legal sex as biological, provoking new controversies. After the decision, over 400 cinema and television professionals signed a letter supporting trans people’s rights, including Paapa Essiedu. When discussions on social media suggested his possible exclusion from the series, the author stepped in clarifying that she would never request his dismissal for his beliefs. Other cast members, including John Lithgow and Bel Powley, have also expressed dissent with Rowling’s positions, underscoring how the debate continues to accompany the new HBO adaptation.

Meanwhile, the premiere of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, the first season of the HBO series, is scheduled on HBO Max for December 25, 2026. In the United Kingdom, work on the second season is already in full swing. Parallel to the television production, the BBC is preparing a two-part documentary dedicated to J.K. Rowling. The project will recount the birth and success of the Harry Potter phenomenon, also examining the author’s public activity and her positions in the debate concerning transgender rights.
