The passing of actress Hayden Panettiere, who died last August 16 at the age of only 36, was caused by the toxic effects of fentanyl and other substances. This was announced today by the Greenville County coroner’s office, which classified the death as accidental.
Hayden Panettiere: the cause of death
The official report states that the cause of death was “the toxic effects of fentanyl, 4-ANPP, Alprazolam, Methocarbamol, and Quetiapine.” Last month, Panettiere, well known to the public for her roles in the successful series Heroes and Nashville, was found unconscious in a residence in Greenville, South Carolina. The local police department and the county medical examiner’s office had subsequently begun an investigation, but a spokesperson told Variety from the outset that there were no obvious signs of “criminal actions or suspicious circumstances.”
“It is with deep sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden,” her father had stated. “She was an extraordinary light and a force of nature who brought immense love and joy to everyone who knew her, and to the millions who watched her on screen.” Her death came three years after that of her younger brother Jansen Panettiere, due to cardiomegaly associated with complications of the aortic valve.
Over the years, Hayden had not hidden the various issues and difficulties that marked her youth and her adult life. Having become an actress and a public figure as a child, she had grown up very early under the spotlight and had spoken of being exposed to substance use as a teenager. In the following years she developed an addiction to alcohol and opioids, which intertwined with anxiety problems and a severe postpartum depression after the birth of her daughter Kaya in 2014. The difficulties also led to separation from her daughter, who was entrusted to her father, and to periods of rehabilitation. Hayden had also revealed that she had endured a violent relationship, while her work on Nashville, paradoxically, had ended up reflecting many of her own problems. In 2023, then, the sudden death of her brother, another trauma. In the years that followed she publicly spoke about her recovery journey and her desire to rebuild her life.
