Hayden Panettiere’s death at just 36 has rattled Hollywood, and it remains enveloped in mystery, becoming the subject of an inquiry in which the anti-drug authorities have also become involved. In recent days many have offered their condolences, their solidarity, and their support to the actor’s family, and some have wanted to recognize in Juliette Barnes, the character from the TV series Nashville, one of the numerous victims of the star system that dominates Hollywood, a world that shows scant consideration for child actors or those who are still very young. It was known to many that Panettiere had not lived a carefree life, starting with those who had the chance to read her autobiography “This Is Me: Reckoning”, which remains unpublished in Italy. In the book, Hayden spoke of sexual abuse by prominent colleagues, the pain surrounding her brother’s death, and a series of difficulties and disappointments that had shaken her but not broken her spirit. There was also the turbulent relationship with her fiancé Brian Hickerson, but that is not the focus today, because what interests us are the words of other former child prodigies who, just as in the case of Judy Garland in her time, were not treated with respect by those who cast them in one film or series after another.
The Tribute to Hayden Panettiere by Rose McGowan and Anna Paquin
Yesterday, both Rose McGowan and Anna Paquin offered heartfelt tributes to Hayden Panettiere, recognizing that both had begun their film careers at a very young age. McGowan, who shares with Hayden the experience of appearing in the Scream franchise, actually made her debut at 19 in My Frozen Friend, yet she felt compelled to share a message in a post published on Instagram:
Do not let children enter show business, it is not a normal thing. May her spirit be free from those who exploited her.
Anna Paquin, who also comes from the Scream world thanks to a cameo in Scream 4, turned to social media to express the following thoughts:
It’s no coincidence that so many child stars, especially girls who are prepubescent, have led tragic lives that ended far too soon. We were not protected, as we should have been, by “systems” that on paper seemed flawless. Rest in peace, HP, MT (Michelle Trachtenberg), DC (Daveigh Chase), and far too many others. We are part of a small, strange club, and you deserve the right support regardless of how our industry made you feel. Send me a private message. I believe that together we will stand by your side. You are not alone. Let’s have each other’s backs; it could make the public disclosure of certain things less terrifying.
If Anna Paquin began acting at age 9 in The Piano, Hayden Panettiere had already been the face of a campaign at 11 months for a toy brand. At age 4 she appeared in the soap opera One Life to Live, while her on-screen debut arrived when she was eight, with a small role in the film The Object of My Desire.
