After a bidding war among many of the major television players, including streaming platforms, HBO has secured The Spread, one of the season’s most eagerly awaited projects. The drama series originates from an idea by Bill Dubuque, the co-creator of the acclaimed Ozark, and will be directed by the filmmaker behind Kingsman and X-Men Matthew Vaughn. It will star the Oscar-winning Javier Bardem, returning to television after Cape Fear and Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.

Written by Dubuque and Sean Sansiveri, The Spread is set in Miami, a city that is turning paradise into power: a “Wall Street of the South” where industry giants clash, elite investment funds, immense wealth, ruthless rivalries, sex, nightlife, and mass-scale entertainment collide. In this sun-soaked arena arrives a visionary billionaire (the character played by Bardem), a man who brings together brilliant minds, people hungry for success, and dangerous personalities, to then unleash their ambitions on the markets that feed America. He pursues a grand objective: to shift the economic center of gravity of Miami and determine how long the party will last.
Bardem will also contribute as an executive producer. “After having long coveted setting an original series in Florida, HBO is thrilled to explore the chaotic splendor of Miami and bring it to life through this kaleidoscope of extraordinary, visionary, and as bold as the story itself talents,” said Francesca Orsi, HBO’s Executive Vice President of Programming and Head of Drama Series and Films. Noah Greenshner of the Fifth Season production company added: “The Spread is a gripping tale about power and ambition, set against the vibrant, glamorous backdrop of Miami. We have assembled an exceptional creative team to capture the energy of this world and this city, and we are excited to collaborate with them and with our partners at HBO, Makeready and Topic to bring the project to life.”
