Less than a week after the premiere of Lanterns, which arrived with very strong numbers, HBO Max is further expanding its slate of series set in the new DC Universe by officially ordering The People v. Gorilla Grodd, a spin-off of the 2025 film directed by James Gunn, Superman. Presented as an eight-episode comedy, it will focus on Jimmy Olsen, the character played by Skyler Gisondo, and will also feature one of DC’s most iconic villains, Gorilla Grodd, portrayed by the new cast addition Jimmy Tatro, star of American Vandal.
The People v. Gorilla Grodd: All We Know About the New TV Series
Formerly known under the title DC Crime, The People v. Gorilla Grodd is written by Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault, the same team behind American Vandal, both also serving as executive producers with Gunn and DC Studios chief Peter Safran. It centers on a superintelligent monkey who is convicted of murdering his father, the King of Gorilla City. “In an eight-episode docuseries based on a true story,” Jimmy Olsen of the Daily Planet reopens the case, investigating whether Gorilla Grodd was unjustly condemned in one of Metropolis’ most famous murder trials.
Yacenda will also direct all the episodes. The rest of the cast includes Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, and Wendell Pierce as Perry White, all three having previously appeared in Superman. They are two journalists and the editor-in-chief of the Daily Planet. Other roles not yet announced will be played by Mary Holland (Little House on the Prairie), Eduardo Franco (Stranger Things), Arian Moayed (Wonder Man), Dan Perrault (American Vandal), Andrew Leeds (Barry), and Tim Baltz (The Righteous Gemstones). A release date has not been announced, and it is unclear whether the series will precede the Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, expected in cinemas on July 9, 2027.
Statements
“The People v. Gorilla Grodd will feel less like an addition to the DC Universe and more like an artifact from it: an original Daily Planet docuseries made for the citizens of Metropolis,” Yacenda explained in a statement. “I hope the series will appeal to fans of comics, of comedy, and of true crime. And even though we can’t speak for the audience just yet, we already know it’s going to be a massive success in Metropolis. They love this series.”
Gunn and Safran added: “Between Skyler’s brilliant performance and the fantastic chemistry of the Daily Planet cast, we already knew after Superman that this would be a fun world to explore. We’re excited to collaborate with the brilliant Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda to take audiences through some of the DC Universe’s darkest and funniest alleyways and streets, as Jimmy sheds light on Metropolis’ judicial system in his docuseries.”
