He Wakes Up and His Mother Is Not the Same: The Phony Trailer Is a Real Enigma

What would happen if, all of a sudden, the person you trust the most in the world wasn’t the person you know anymore? From this unsettling premise begins Phony, the new Hulu series that blends mystery, dark comedy, and a coming-of-age tale, and which will stream on Disney+ in Italy soon. The cast features two actors who are especially familiar to The White Lotus fans, Connie Britton and Sam Nivola, having appeared in the first and third seasons, respectively. Watch below the official trailer that introduces the mystery at the heart of the series.

Phony: The Plot of the Series Starring Connie Britton and Sam Nivola

At the center of Phony’s story, created by Nick Paley, is Sonny (Sam Nivola), a teenager who wakes up in a hospital after being involved in a car accident. But when he returns to his day-to-day life, something doesn’t add up: his mother Ellen, the person who represents his sole true point of reference, seems to have been replaced by an impostor. Ellen (Connie Britton) is a very particular single mother: in addition to being Sonny’s only parent and his best friend, she is also the principal of the high school the boy attends. This situation makes it even harder for him to distance himself from the woman who, at least in his perception, no longer seems to be the woman he has always known.

A Mystery That Plays with Reality

The trailer for Phony showcases this very element at the series’ core, intentionally keeping both Sonny and the audience in doubt. Small changes in Ellen’s behavior, details of her appearance, and seemingly inexplicable situations feed the boy’s suspicion, while it becomes increasingly difficult to determine what is real and what might instead be the result of his perception. The series thus appears to constantly tread the line between reality and paranoia, turning the mother–son relationship into the heart of a mystery with decidedly unusual hues.

The Cast of Phony

Apart from Connie Britton and Sam Nivola, the series’ cast includes Grace Brennan, Maliq Johnson, Colter Lee, Meera Syal, and Mahaela Park. Britton, a five-time Emmy nominee, is also among the executive producers of the project.
