The third season of The Last of Us will bring a number of changes to the story as we have known it so far, starting from the narrative point of view, which, as we know for some time, will be entrusted to Abby. Based on the eponymous video game franchise from Naughty Dog, The Last of Us is currently focused on creating the third season that will recount what happened to Abby after she killed Joel and returned to Seattle. This does not mean we will not see Ellie and the other characters who have so far animated the heart of The Last of Us, and in this regard, Gabriel Luna has also shared his thoughts on Tommy and how the third season will offer a nearly dark turn for his character.
The Last Of Us 3, Gabriel Luna previews how Tommy will be different in the new episodes: it’s all about perspective
Joel’s brother, Tommy, has tried to stay grounded, but his image as the good guy will be put to the test during the third season after what happened in Seattle. According to Gabriel Luna, the perspective shift will render his character as a figure with many shades, taking on different personalities depending on the vantage point. In an interview with Screen Rant, he teased what to expect: “I think it’s all a matter of perspective. To them, I’m the villain. To us, I’m there solely for my niece and I’m trying to leave the city. I love that moment from the game, when you meet Tommy in that way. I won’t say too much, but there are some fantastic things about Tommy in this season, and we’re very proud of them, and we’re ready to see it through.”
Tommy is a leader within the Jackson community, guiding the survivors with his wife Maria and welcoming his brother Joel and Ellie. Unfortunately, though, Joel’s life is not long in the course of the second season, as he is hunted down and brutally killed by Abby, who has nurtured revenge for years. Tommy must process that immense loss while also taking care of Ellie, who heads to Seattle following a path of justice and revenge. In order to bring Ellie and Dina home, Tommy and Jesse also set out, arriving in the city with the intention of a brief stay, fully aware of the risks. Unfortunately, the final scene that unfolds at their hideout suggests that the third season will test everyone severely.
Abby, after discovering the bodies of her friends at the aquarium, tracked Ellie down to the theater and, as a first act, fired at Jesse, who died instantly. Shortly after, she aims the weapon at Tommy, and the screen goes dark just as another gunshot is heard. We don’t know what happened next—whether Abby shot and killed Tommy or if the shot was fired at someone else. According to the games, Tommy plays a crucial role in Abby’s story, appearing to her more as an antagonist than as one of the good guys. For Abby, Tommy is exactly like Joel, a character she has known only as the ruthless killer who cold-bloodedly murdered her father.
