Taylor Sheridan is the mind behind numerous TV series such as Lioness, Yellowstone and Mayor of Kingstown, and it is precisely for the latter that he drew inspiration from his personal life. Launched in 2021 with four seasons in the books and a fifth final on the way, Mayor of Kingstown has chosen Jeremy Renner as its lead in the role of Mike McLusky, who together with his brothers Kyle and Mitch coordinates what happens in Kingstown, trying to preserve order. But what aspect of his personal life did Taylor Sheridan draw from?
Mayor of Kingstown hides a very personal detail about Taylor Sheridan
The dramatic thriller Mayor of Kingstown is set in a Michigan town where the only thriving industry is the prison system. In a turbulent context marked by crime, violence and corruption, the McLusky brothers emerge: Mitch and Mike serve as mediators, ironically dubbed the mayors, and they strive to preserve order among the police, inmates, prison guards, street gangs and mobsters. But maintaining that precarious balance is not easy, and in a recent interview with Town & Country Taylor Sheridan admitted he identified a lot with Mike’s life, portrayed by Jeremy Renner: “Here is a man in a place he hates, who tries to keep the city together instead of leaving. For me, this has been rather autobiographical, because I was stuck in Los Angeles. This was for me.”
Although today Taylor Sheridan is a widely recognized name on the small screen, his beginnings in Hollywood were not so easy. He started out as an actor (and indeed many will remember him as David Hale in Sons of Anarchy), but it is with screenwriting that he earned his first big acclaim. He wrote the screenplay for Sicario in 2015 and for Hell or High Water afterwards, before turning his attention to television: over the years he worked on Yellowstone with Kevin Costner, and created other TV series such as 1883, 1923, Tulsa King, Lioness, Landman and The Madison. So busy, yet so far from Hollywood: during this flourishing period, Sheridan decided to move away from Los Angeles and relocate to Texas, and he has never regretted the decision. And perhaps it is precisely his ranch that fuels his imagination, having produced so many successful stories to date, including Mayor of Kingstown. In the meantime, he is also at work on a Tulsa King spin-off titled Frisco King with Samuel L. Jackson in the lead.
