Howling Wolf, Robert Eggers Howling: Here’s the New Werwulf Trailer

Forgive the title a bit facetious, I hope; also because, to quote a famous line from a Verdone film, there is “little to laugh about” here. There is decidedly little to laugh about in the new trailer for Werwulf by Robert Eggers, which confirms and amplifies all the impressions formed so far, namely those of a rough, tactile, dark, frightening film. The new images from the film in which the director of Nosferatu faces head-on and radically the myth of the werewolf, going back to the ancestral roots of the same, are images teeming with cold, mud, blood, night. Of faces disfigured, or marked by hunger, by weariness, by fear. One could almost say that, especially compared to his latest works, Eggers has moved back toward the style of his debut (which remains, for the writer here, his best film), namely The Witch. We hope it will really be so.
Werwulf was written by Eggers together with the Icelandic writer, screenwriter and poet Sjón, a former collaborator of Björk and screenwriter of the horror Lamb, with whom the director has already collaborated in The Northman. In the cast return many of the actors he has worked with in the past, especially in Nosferatu: among them Aaron Taylor Johnson, Lily-Rose Depp, Ralph Ineson, Willem Dafoe. Jarin Blaschke and Louise Ford return respectively to the direction of photography (which here seems decidedly notable) and to the editing.
