Among the masterpieces of the last century returning to the cinema in a complete, restored edition, there is also a classic of eroticism that superbly blends Eros and Thanatos: The Realm of the Senses, Nagisa Oshima’s 1976 film which at the time of its release caused scandal and heated debates. Now this film is poised to return to cinemas starting November 9, and it offers a unique chance to experience it anew or to revisit it and to rediscover today its still-present full force. For the occasion a new trailer has been created for the restored 4K version, which, it should be noted, remains forbidden for viewers under 18. The Realm of the Senses arrived four years after another controversial masterpiece on similar themes, though set in a contemporary milieu, Bernardo Bertolucci’s Last Tango in Paris.
