The official trailer for In Waves, Netflix’s animated feature, has been released, and the film is slated to arrive on the platform in early December, with a theatrical release in late November at least in the United States. It is the adaptation of a graphic novel dedicated to processing grief through art, where the memory of the person who has passed away travels through a shared bond with the sea. The book is also known in Italy under the title “A ondate“.
In Waves, the Story of Netflix’s Animated Film Based on “A ondate”
Like the graphic novel “A ondate” by A. J. Dungo, from which it draws, following the adaptation by Fanny Burdino and Samuel Doux, the animated feature In Waves by Phuong Mai Nguyen, produced between France and Belgium, tells the story of AJ, a young Los Angeleno who makes his living from skateboarding and drawing. His life changes when he falls in love with the surfer Kristen, and together they share a precious communion with the ocean. When an illness strikes Kristen, AJ will have to fight alongside her, then learn to accept the loss, following the path depicted in the same graphic novel, and consequently in the film we will see. Having already appeared at Cannes 2025 in the Critics’ Week, where it garnered praise, In Waves marks Nguyen’s feature directorial debut, after a background in short films. In the original, the voices are provided by Will Sharpe and Stephanie Hsu.
In Waves is just one of Netflix’s animated offerings for the coming weeks and months: remember that the studio’s own Netflix Animation Studios will release Steps in November and we await the final film from Skydance Animation before Paramount’s return to theaters, namely the highly anticipated Ray Gunn by Brad Bird (in December). Not to forget Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory in November 2027, as well as all third-party releases, in which the platform did not participate in production, such as In Waves itself.
