Insidious, the recap of the saga before the sixth film: what is The Further and how does it work? (VIDEO)
Here is our video recap of everything you need to know before rushing to the cinema for the sixth chapter of Insidious – Out of The Further.
One of the essential pieces of information for engaging with the Insidious saga is understanding exactly what The Further is. In this horror universe, it is a parallel astral dimension to our world, a kind of dark limbo that lures lost souls, a timeless place shrouded in thick fog and populated by tormented spirits and demons who wish to cross the boundary and plunge into the world of the living. But how does one access The Further? There are two paths: the first comes with death; in this case some souls who have passed away in their sleep do not find the light and end up in The Further, because they are lost. The second path is more dangerous because it requires astral projection, practiced by astral travelers who can detach their soul from their body and roam The Further while still alive. The danger is right around the corner, because as the soul wanders far away, the body remains empty and defenseless, ready to be occupied by any entity that manages to reach it.
The most important character in the Insidious saga is Elise Rainier, portrayed by Lin Shaye, a medium who can see spirits and communicate with them, traveling The Further without getting lost. For years, Elise has helped families haunted by dark presences but has paid a very high price that becomes the throughline linking nearly every film in the saga, including the latest release.
What happens in the first three films of the horror saga
Released in 2010, Insidious is the first film of the franchise that introduces the story of the Lambert family: Josh, Renai and their three children move into a new house, unaware of what would befall them. The eldest son Dalton one day explores the attic, but after a nasty fall he falls into a coma and never wakes. From that moment on, strange phenomena occur in the house, and Renai persuades her husband to move again, without solving the problem. That is when Elise Rainier enters the picture, explaining to the family that the problem is Dalton, a natural astral traveler whose soul is trapped in The Further. Dalton has pushed too far and cannot return to his body, now left vulnerable. It turns out that even his father Josh, as a child, possessed the same gift as Dalton, but Elise helped him back then by erasing his memories. Now he is the唯一one who can save his son, so he ventures into The Further with Elise and her assistants Specs and Tucker. Josh manages to complete the mission: Dalton is back in his body and everything seems to return to normal; unfortunately, this is not the case, because it isn’t Josh who returns from The Further, but the demon that tormented him since childhood, and it is this demon who discovers Josh and kills Elise.
In the sequel Beyond the Dark the past of Josh and his family is explored more deeply. The story picks up right after the end of the first film, with Josh found lying beside Elise’s lifeless body. His wife notices that Josh is strange, more distant, and fears that the one who has returned from The Further is not truly his husband. Meanwhile, Josh’s mother, , investigates their family’s past alongside Elise’s assistants and Carl, and discovers that as a child her son was tormented by a demon disguised as a woman who repeatedly asked him to speak to her. Investigating reveals that this is the spirit of Parker Crane, who as a child was forced by his mother to dress and behave as a girl, triggering a violent response in him: he became the serial killer known as The Black Bride, and Crane’s spirit possesses Josh’s body. The story moves toward the finale in The Further: Carl finds the real Josh and Elise too, and together they confront the Crane house. Dalton joins them and helps Josh rediscover the way home. The film ends with Josh being restored to his body.
In Insidious 3 – The Beginning the story goes back in time and becomes a prequel set before the Lambert family’s story, further exploring Elise’s past and her earlier experiences as a medium. In this case, her history is connected to Quinn Brenner, who lives with her father and younger brother after their mother’s death. Quinn wants to contact her mother and seeks Elise’s help, but the medium herself is also dealing with the recent loss of her husband and is terrified by a malignant presence that has begun to stalk her every time she uses her gift. Initially Elise refuses Quinn’s offer, and she decides to try it on her own with a home ritual that attracts unwanted attention—the Man Who Cannot Breathe. Quinn is eventually struck by a car and immobilized in bed with her legs in casts, just as the demon’s manifestations become increasingly physical and frightening. At that point, the Brenner family, desperate, once again begs Elise for help, who ventures into The Further to save that innocent girl. During that journey, Elise also reunites with her husband’s spirit and, thanks to that experience, forms a bond with the improvised ghost-hunters Specs and Tucker.
Insidious, the summary of the fourth and fifth film
In 2018 it was the turn of Insidious – The Last Key, again a prequel set before the events of the first film and that deepens the origins of Elise and her abilities as a medium. As a child, Elise lived near a penitentiary where her father worked as a prison guard and punished her every time she used her gift by locking her in the basement. It is there that the girl meets a demon named KeyFace, because it has keys for fingers and is connected to the various tragedies that occurred in the adjacent prison. In those years the life of Elise and her brother is marked by a tragedy that will haunt them for a long time. Once grown, Elise ran away from home, severing ties with her father, but years later she returns to the house where she grew up, now in the hands of another man, to investigate an infestation. She uncovers several secrets, starting with those of the new owner who has abducted and imprisoned numerous women, and then also Anna, a woman she had seen in the house as a teen but had believed to be a ghost. Instead, she discovers that Anna was kept prisoner and then killed by her father, and at that point she understands that both her father and the new owner were actually controlled by the demon KeyFace. When the demon attacks one of her grandnieces, Elise decides to go into The Further where she reunites with both her mother and father and does not yield to the demon’s temptations, defeating it once and for all. The film then ends with a direct link to the first film, as Elise dreams of young Dalton in The Further and, upon waking, receives a call from Grandma Lorraine.
The fifth film titled Insidious – The Red Door was released in 2023 and brings back the Lambert story, about nine years after the events of the second film. Josh has separated from his wife and Dalton attends college, having almost erased all memories of that tragic experience. Grandma Lorraine’s death slowly reopens those wounds. Dalton begins to paint a red door during art sessions, awakening his link to The Further. Father and son confront visions of spirits and start to recover their memories. Josh also discovers from his ex-wife what happened years earlier, and in The Further he finds his father again. Dalton, however, encounters once more the demon with the Red Face that seeks to possess his body. With his father’s help, he manages to save himself and realizes that the red door he drew is actually a direct link to The Further, so he covers it with black paint and seals it. What saves Josh is his father Ben. Back in the real world, father and son—with their memories restored—rebuild the bond that time had worn down. The post-credits scene of the film, however, shows the glow of the Red Door.
Insidious – Out of The Further: what we must know about the sixth film of the saga
Directed by Jacob Chase, the sixth film of the franchise titled Out of The Further proposes a new path to follow. Moving away from the Lambert family, it introduces a wholly new story led by Gemma, played by Amelia Eve, who lives in the same house where she was born and where her daughter is growing up. Gemma can also travel through The Further, but, unlike what has been shown so far, she seems able to do more. In addition to moving and wandering The Further, Gemma is capable of bringing back what she finds there, an extremely delicate power that draws the attention of dangerous entities. As with the previous films, Elise returns as the only constant presence in the franchise.
