Running short of space on an iPhone does not automatically mean choosing which family pictures or holiday videos to erase. Apple provides an app-management option that can recover storage while leaving an app’s documents and data on the device.
The feature is called Offload App. It is particularly useful for a large game, streaming service or travel app that is not needed every day, although the amount recovered depends on the apps installed and how much space their software occupies.
Check what is using the space first
Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage. The phone may take a moment to calculate usage, after which it displays storage categories and a list of apps. The wording or layout can vary slightly with the version of iOS, device model or region.
Before changing anything, look at the figures shown for an app. Its app size is not necessarily the same as the space occupied by its documents and data. Offloading is designed to remove the app itself, not the associated documents and data retained for a later return.
That distinction matters. An app with a large installation but relatively little stored data may be a good candidate. An app whose space is mainly downloads, documents or cache may yield a smaller saving than the total number displayed beside it.
How to offload one app
From the iPhone Storage list, tap an app and choose Offload App, then confirm if prompted. According to Apple’s official iPhone guide, this frees storage used by the app while keeping its documents and data.
The app’s icon may remain on the Home Screen with a small download symbol, making it clear that the software is no longer installed locally. Tapping the icon can reinstall it. Its retained data should then be restored, provided the app is still available to download from the App Store.
That availability condition is worth remembering. An old app may be withdrawn by its developer, become incompatible, or no longer appear in a particular region. Do not treat offloading as a substitute for backing up important information held in an app.
Offloading is also different from Delete App. Deleting an app can remove the app and its related data, whereas offloading is intended to preserve those documents and settings. Read the confirmation message before proceeding, especially where valuable work is stored only inside the app.
Let the iPhone manage unused apps
For ongoing housekeeping, iOS can offer Offload Unused Apps. This allows the phone to remove apps that have not been used recently while retaining their documents and data. Depending on the iOS release, the option may appear as a recommendation in iPhone Storage or elsewhere in Settings.
Automatic offloading is convenient for people who regularly reach the storage limit. However, it also means an app might need to be downloaded again just when it is wanted. That can be inconvenient without Wi-Fi or mobile coverage, so frequent travellers may prefer to offload selected apps manually.
It is sensible to open essential banking, authentication, ticketing and transport apps before a trip and confirm that they are installed and working. Reinstallation may require an internet connection, an Apple Account, a fresh sign-in or another verification step imposed by the app provider.
What happens to photos
Using Offload App does not delete photos from the Photos app. The control deals with the selected app’s installation and preserves that app’s documents and data; it is not a command to clear the photo library.
There is one practical nuance: material kept inside a third-party app is not always the same as an image saved to Apple’s Photos library. If an app contains unique projects, drafts or downloads, check its own backup or export options before making changes, even though offloading is designed to retain its data.
The storage recovered can be several gigabytes when one or more bulky apps are suitable, but that is not guaranteed. The iPhone Storage screen provides the device-specific figures. Start with an infrequently used, easily replaceable app, verify the saving, and leave irreplaceable data backed up rather than relying on storage management alone.
