Since Law & Order: Organized Crime was canceled after five seasons, one question has obsessed fans: will we ever see Christopher Meloni again in the role of Elliot Stabler? The hope of many rests with Law & Order: SVU, still on the air and approaching its twenty-eighth season. It wouldn’t be the first time, after all. In an interview with Variety, executive producer Peter Jankowski spoke about this possibility, hinting that something is indeed in the works.
Christopher Meloni: What will happen in season 28 of Law & Order: SVU?
Jankowski revealed that Meloni, formerly one of the stars of Law & Order: SVU, left the cast in 2011 at the end of its twelfth season and returned occasionally between 2021 and 2025 during the production of Organized Crime, visited the show’s New York City base. The details of the visit are being kept secret, but Jankowski clarified that there was a meeting between the actor and showrunner Michele Fazekas.
Fazekas, the first woman to serve as showrunner in SVU’s 27-year history, had already hinted recently at the possibility of bringing Stabler back on screen. “I love Meloni, and every so often I ask casting if he’s available,” she told NBC Insider. “If I can persuade him, I’ll definitely do it.” That said, the return must obviously make sense. “It has to be meaningful and must derive from the characters,” the showrunner explained. “There have been at least two occasions this season [season twenty-seven, available in Italy on NOW] where I asked myself: ‘Hey, is he available?’.”
Meloni has appeared only once in each of the last two seasons of Law & Order: SVU. His most significant foray, however, remains the 2023 appearance in the twelfth episode of season 24, when Stabler and his longtime colleague Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) almost kissed, thrilling many fans who have long hoped for a romantic relationship between the two. However, Olivia on that occasion stepped aside, not wanting to ruin their friendship.
