The new film by Asghar Farhadi is titled Parallel Stories, the Iranian director who has won the Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film on two occasions — in 2012 with A Separation and in 2017 with The Salesman. This latest project was shot by Farhadi in France, the country where he has been living permanently for several years, and it features some of the most renowned and esteemed names in French cinema, including Isabelle Huppert, Virginie Efira, Vincent Cassel and Pierre Niney, joined by the young rising star Adam Bessa and the venerable icon Catherine Deneuve.
Presented in competition at the last Cannes Film Festival and set to hit theaters from November 26 with Lucky Red, Parallel Stories draws loosely from an episode of Krzysztof Kieślowski’s Decalogue (the sixth one, which the Polish director later expanded into Not Coveting Another Man’s Wife) blending this with clear Hitchcockian influences; the story follows Sylvie (Huppert), a writer in crisis who, from the windows of her Paris apartment, watches the lives of her neighbors to draw inspiration, focusing especially on an apartment where three sound editors for cinema and television work and, in a sense, live (Efira, Cassel and Niney). When Sylvie, somewhat reluctantly, agrees to let the young Adam (Bessa) work for her to help with daily tasks, she cannot foresee the consequences of this decision, nor the fact that she will become entangled in a web in which what seems authentic may prove to be a fabrication and fiction ends up shaping the events.
