The skilled Massimiliano Caiazzo, in the role of Pino Daniele, continues to win over audiences at the Italian weekend box office: according to Cinetel data, Je So’ Pazzo by Nicola Prosatore registers another €1,033,500, bringing its total so far to €3,060,000. A nice satisfaction for 01 Distribution and for the rest of the cast, including Mariasole Pollio, Giovanni Ludeno, Giuseppe Brunetti, Leonardo Bianconi, Monica Nappo and Antonia Truppo. The film has retained the top spot from last week, corresponding to its debut, thus managing to curb the debut of competition from across the Atlantic of a very different kind.
Clayface by James Watkins, a horror-tinged superhero film starring Tom Rhys Harries and a curious move from DC Studios / Warner Bros., debuts in second place with €737,300 (€776,200 including previews): likely greeted by critics more warmly than its detractors had anticipated, the feature opened worldwide with $43 million (Box Office Mojo) and topped the US box office. According to information gathered by The Hollywood Reporter and Variety, it shouldn’t have cost more than about $40 million, so in this case breaking even on the budget is possible: it won’t be a Supergirl-like sequel, in other words.
The new adaptation of Sense and Sensibility, directed by Georgia Oakley and starring Daisy Edgar-Jones, Caitriona Balfe and Fiona Shaw, debuts in third place with almost €700,000 in four days. Elsewhere it had already been released a few weeks earlier and so far has grossed worldwide about $29,400,000. It could still fail to recoup its $20 million budget, according to sources such as Deadline.
Dropping from third to fourth place is the film that will represent us at the Oscars, the horror-thriller The Stranger by Paolo Strippoli, where Jasmine Trinca makes a pact with the unsettling appearance Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, to maintain the facade of her perfect family: the total so far amounts to €2,733,800 (€581,300 in the weekend).
Falling from second to fifth is the horror Mammina with Jessica Chastain, where a girl has to deal with the hallucinatory appearance of an “other mother“: here in Italy we are at €3,839,000 (€367,200), worldwide we are talking about $94,868,730, against a budget of less than $20 million (Deadline and Variety sources).
We note with a certain bitterness that the stunning stop-motion animated film Wildwood: The Secrets of the Forbidden Forest from Laika Entertainment, directed by Travis Knight, on its first run could not rise beyond sixth place with €360,000. In the USA it has grossed $11,600,000, but to read the other worldwide figures we will have to wait.
