Jennifer’s Body 2: Diablo Cody Reveals What Jennifer Will Be Like, Starring Megan Fox

An eagerly awaited film, perhaps because in its own way it seems to embody girl power, is Jennifer’s Body 2, the sequel to Jennifer’s Body which, after its release in 2009, wasn’t appreciated as much as it deserved and earned a paltry sum, only to be reassessed thanks to streaming platforms and the #MeToo movement. The screenplay for the film had been written by Diablo Cody, while directing was entrusted to Karyn Kusama, who in 2000 had directed the noteworthy Girlfight. She will once again sit in the director’s chair, and we know she can’t wait to get back to work, and in fact she stated, months ago: “I’m certain that Diablo will do something incredible.” Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried have also expressed the desire to return in their respective roles of the protagonist Jennifer and her best friend Needy, who at the end of the first film slaughtered the entire rock band Low Shoulder that had sacrificed Jennifer to Satan in exchange for sudden popularity. It was precisely the friendship between Needy and Jennifer that was one of the horror’s fundamental themes, while the strength of Jennifer’s Body 2 will be the evolution of Jennifer, who at the very start of the new story appears decidedly less aggressive. If we’re outlining all this, it’s because, during an episode of the Petticoat Revolution podcast, Diablo Cody spoke about the main character. Here is what she said:

(The sequel) will explain even better why Jennifer deserves empathy and what she had to go through. I consider Jennifer a character to root for, both before and after the transformation. She is always on her own, she feels lonely and she is very insecure. Everyone remembers when Jennifer believed herself to be a goddess and was strong and radiant, while they seem to have forgotten the moments in the film when she feels emptied and is pale. For me Megan has portrayed these two Jennifers so well, in such distinct ways. The nice thing – I can’t say too much, but you know we’re working on the sequel – is that in the new film I’ve had the opportunity to deepen the reasons why we should be on Jennifer’s side and explain what she had to go through, and I can say with certainty that the character is profoundly alone and this makes her moving, something people don’t always notice.

Jennifer’s Body 2 will be produced by 20th Century Studios and, at the moment, does not yet have a release date.

For her performance in Jennifer’s Body, Megan Fox was nominated for a Razzie Award as Worst Actress. Amanda Seyfried, meanwhile, won the MTV Movie Award for the scariest performance.
