Jensen Ackles has signed on for his next leading role in a TV series. The actor, beloved by Supernatural fans, will be at the center of Rules of Prey, the MGM+ streaming service adaptation of the popular Prey novels by John Sandford. The actor’s most recent full-time commitment was in Countdown, a Prime Video series that had a short life, being canceled after just one season. Now Ackles tries again, hoping for a warmer reception, bolstered by the popularity of the original novels.
Rules of Prey: The Plot and Jensen Ackles’ Role
In Rules of Prey Jensen Ackles will portray Lucas Davenport, a maverick investigator forced back into action to confront a serial killer who appears to have chosen him as the target of a macabre game. The character is described as a kind of avenging angel, endowed with a brilliant mind and unconventional investigative methods. His approach to justice has, however, led him to clash with the rules, eventually forcing him to leave the Minneapolis Police Department.
The situation shifts when a series of seemingly inexplicable murders targets certain residents of the city and, above all, appears to have been orchestrated to send a message specifically to Davenport. The former investigator decides to return to the case. At the center of the story will be a clash between Davenport and a particularly intelligent serial killer. The detective will have to decipher the complex moral code that guides his foe and understand the personal vendetta behind the killings. The first season of Rules of Prey will consist of eight episodes. Production is planned in Toronto and will be led by Bruce Terris, who will serve as showrunner and will also be an executive producer alongside Jensen Ackles himself.
From Supernatural to Rules of Prey: Where We’ve Seen and Will See Jensen Ackles
For many viewers, Jensen Ackles will remain inextricably linked to Dean Winchester, the character he portrayed for fifteen seasons in Supernatural, which concluded in 2020. Since then, however, the actor has continued to build a very active television career. In 2022 Ackles returned to share the screen with Jared Padalecki in an episode of Walker, The CW series led by Padalecki himself. He subsequently appeared in the third season of Big Sky.
His most significant television character in the period following Supernatural is probably Soldier Boy in The Boys. Ackles portrayed the character in the Prime Video series, returning to wear his emblematic persona until the series finale. But his Soldier Boy will also be the star of the prequel Vought Rising, already shot and slated for 2027. The actor also continues to appear in Tracker, where he plays the brother of Colter Shaw, the protagonist played by Justin Hartley. Ackles will return in the fifth episode of the fourth season of the series. Yet now all eyes are on Rules of Prey, where Jensen Ackles will have the opportunity to portray a new, tormented, and unconventional lead. Undoubtedly a compelling challenge.
