Jessica Lange Ranks Her American Horror Story Characters and Crowns the Winner

What would American Horror Story be like without Jessica Lange? The actress herself has reflected on the numerous characters she has portrayed since the show’s debut, the beloved horror anthology TV series created by Ryan Murphy, and she even drew up a ranking highlighting her absolute favorites, given that in the thirteenth season she reprised four roles: Constance Langdon, Elsa Mars, Sister Jude Martin, and Fiona Goode.

American Horror Story: Jessica Lange draws up a ranking of her characters, revealing which one is her absolute favorite

A remarkably versatile performer, Jessica Lange has inhabited a range of characters across the seasons of American Horror Story, and, on the occasion of the thirteenth installment now streaming on Disney+, she brought back all four characters she has portrayed so far: Constance Langdon, whom she played in the first season, Murder House, and in the eighth, Apocalypse; Elsa Mars from Freak Show; Sister Jude from Asylum; and Fiona Goode from Coven.

Speaking on Entertainment Weekly’s Awardist podcast, Lange thoughtfully compiled a ranking, highlighting which of these four characters stands as her favorite. In first place? In her view, it has to be Elsa Mars, the circus manager from season four. And the reason? “Simply because it was my favorite season. I loved the world we created there, and I’ve always felt that set was like, you know, a long poem. It was just wonderful. And the characters we brought into that carnival of marvels.” Regarding Freak Show, the part she most enjoyed was this: “They let me sing. Nobody ever lets me do that, because I can’t sing.”

For second place, the ranking is a split decision between the intrusive neighboring Constance from the first season and Sister Jude, the tyrannical headmistress of Asylum in the second season: “I’d put both of them in the middle of the pack,” she concluded. At the bottom is Fiona Goode, the former Supreme of the coven in the third season: “The whole witch storyline is what interested me the least. But there are some scenes with Fiona Goode that are among my favorites, like the final scene with Danny Huston in the afterlife.”

Although she had previously said she wasn’t interested in another season, Jessica Lange returned for the thirteenth installment: “Ryan Murphy talked me into coming back. At first he spoke to me about the possibility of playing Constance, which I think was his favorite character among the ones I’ve played. But I told him I would return only if I could portray all four characters,” she noted on Live with Kelly and Mark. Apparently, her request was granted.
