John Goodman Debuts on Netflix with The Beast in Me 2: Cast Revealed

On TV we mostly love him for his comedic roles, such as the unforgettable ones in Roseanne and The Righteous Gemstones. Now the Emmy-winning John Goodman has decided to test himself by stepping into a decidedly darker role in the second season of Netflix’s acclaimed psychological crime thriller The Beast in Me, alongside the lead Claire Danes.

The Beast in Me: John Goodman’s Role in Season 2

The Beast in Me was conceived by Gabe Rotter as a miniseries. However, the public and critical success was such that, including two Emmy statuettes at the latest Emmy edition, the writer and Netflix decided to push forward and expand the story. This has so far followed Aggie Wiggs (Danes), a successful writer who, after the tragic death of her son, has withdrawn from the world. The grief has blocked her professionally as well: she can’t write anymore and struggles to find meaning in her life.

Her life changes when, in the house next door, Nile Jarvis (Matthew Rhys), a powerful real estate magnate who is handsome, arrogant and unsettling, moves in. A terrible suspicion hangs over Nile: he might be involved in the mysterious disappearance of his first wife. Aggie, curious yet frightened by the new neighbor, decides to investigate him and to cast him as the protagonist of her next book. But the closer she gets to the truth, the more she finds herself drawn into a dangerous psychological game, built on manipulation, secrets and ambiguity.

The plot of season two has not yet been revealed, but Goodman’s casting offers a concrete clue. The 74-year-old actor will play Jack, Aggie’s father, whom we know to be a long-time con artist. This suggests the story could delve into the family history of the character played by Danes and her troubled relationship with her father. In the first season it emerged that Jack was arrested when she was 12 years old. In an interview shortly before the tragic car accident that caused her son’s death, Aggie was asked about her parent and the reason why the two had cut ties. She explained that her father had sued her, claiming that she was profiting from his story.
