We had discussed the remake of the 2019 Korean film The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil for Paramount, entrusted to the direction of James Wan (if you don’t recall it, you can read about it below). Now comes the news, reported by Hollywood Reporter and Variety, that Keanu Reeves is in talks for the project, which makes it an even more intriguing venture. The cast also includes the original performer, Don Lee (also known as Ma Dong-seok), who will reprise the role he played in the original. The plot, as the title suggests, centers on a criminal and a police officer who are forced to collaborate in order to capture a serial killer. Shown at the Cannes Film Festival, the film earned enthusiastic reviews.
The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil represents Wan’s return to directing after Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom of 2023. The filmmaker also serves as a producer on the movie alongside Jason Blum with their Blumhouse/Atomic Monster company, together with Don Lee’s Big Punch Global, Sylvester Stallone and D. Matt Geller and with Chris S. Lee and Lorenzo Bonaventura, which gives the sense of a fairly costly project given the talent involved. The remake project was initiated in the year of the original film’s release, 2019, with Wan entering production last spring. The latest screenplay draft is by Eric Pearson, while the earlier versions were written by Shay Hatten and Brian Helgeland.
