Having departed the cast of Grey’s Anatomy at the end of the previous season, Kevin McKidd is ready for his next television venture, a project that will take him back to his homeland. The Scottish actor will star in The Young Team, a BBC drama directed by Paul McGuigan and based on the eponymous novel by Graeme Armstrong, who also hails from Scotland. The cast of the series has also welcomed Laura Fraser (The Missing), along with a number of other actors and actresses.
The Young Team: The Plot of the New TV Series with Kevin McKidd
The Young Team follows the teenage Azzy Williams and his friends as, on a Friday night, they wander the streets of Airdrie, Scotland, with bottles of wine in hand and techno music blasting in their ears. Azzy is ready to smoke, take drugs, drink wine, and get into fights; his goal is to be fully admitted into the local gang. However, when the boy—determined to prove his worth—makes a bold move, a brutal clash between rival gangs erupts, placing him at the center of the events.
According to Deadline, McKidd will portray Mr. McGiver, Azzy’s headteacher, a figure of reference, while Fraser will play Angela, the boy’s mother, a woman who must endure many hardships. The lead will be portrayed by James Smith (MobLand). Other roles will be filled by Connor Newall (28 Years Later: The Temple of Bones), Scot Greenan (Half Man) and the up-and-coming Beinn Catchpole, David Russell, Mick Mack, Caiden Henderson-Brown, Lewis Ray and Jack Mooney.
“Thanks to The Young Team, I am returning to directing in Scotland for the first time in 30 years; I could not imagine a more fitting way to celebrate this professional return,” McGuigan stated. “It’s a privilege to work with the series’ cast, an exciting new generation of talent from working-class backgrounds, selected through an open audition process that saw participation from over 1,000 young people. I can’t wait to see the characters of The Young Team come to life as we bring Graeme Armstrong’s iconic novel to the screen.”
