The master of contemporary horror, the author of cult classics like Hostel, Cabin Fever, and the recent hit Thanksgiving, returns behind the camera with the boldest, most extreme and ambitious project of his career, an idea nurtured for over twenty years and finally realized thanks to his new independent label, The Horror Section. After teasing audiences with the first trailer, Ice Cream Man now reveals its most unsettling face, placing at the center the true, unsuspecting protagonists of Eli Roth’s nightmare: the children.
To tell the wildest side of this universe are Eli Roth and the cast in the new behind-the-scenes featurette released by Midnight Factory, which takes the audience behind the scenes of the film and recounts the on-set experience alongside eighty young performers, up to the realization of the scene the director nicknamed “Kid Calamity”, the climactic moment when the kids’ fury erupts into an unstoppable mix of creativity and sadism. A sequence built as a crescendo of chaos and horror, involving dozens of children and pushing to the limit the irreverent soul of the film, also winking at cinematic masterpieces like Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds.
In Ice Cream Man, innocence becomes the most unpredictable face of Evil. In Bayleen Bay, an idyllic American town where days pass with outdoor games, good neighbors, and the inevitable ice-cream truck, the arrival of an enigmatic ice-cream vendor rapidly turns tranquility into nightmare: after sampling his confections, the children become ruthless killers and unleash a massacre that sweeps the entire community. Pastel tones, smiles and the atmosphere of a perfect American suburb thus become ingredients of a collective nightmare, in which Roth pushes to the extreme one of horror’s most powerful archetypes—the corruption of innocence—with the ferocity and black humor that have made his cinema unmistakable. To heighten the experience even further, an exceptional soundtrack featuring the legendary rapper Snoop Dogg adds a pop, contemporary soul to Eli Roth’s latest madness.
