In the Grand Public section of the Roma Film Festival (October 13-25, 2026), there will be Klara and the Sun, Taika Waititi’s new film starring Jenna Ortega, adapted from the eponymous novel by Nobel Prize winner Kazuo Ishiguro. We can present you with a new official Italian trailer, in anticipation of the release scheduled for October 22 by Eagle Pictures. The cast also includes Amy Adams, Mia Tharia, Steve Buscemi, and Natasha Lyonne, among others. Waititi himself also took charge of the adaptation.

In the story of Klara and the Sun, in a near future there exist “Artificial Friends”, androids designed specifically to keep company. Klara (Jenna Ortega) is one of these Artificial Friends and she isn’t even a top-of-the-line model anymore, but she still enters the life of Josie (Mia Tharia): the girl is processing a profound grief and doesn’t get along at all with her mother (portrayed on screen by Amy Adams). Despite a somewhat difficult adaptation, also due to the total naivety of Klara toward the world, the android will manage to find her place in Josie’s life, perhaps metaphorically bringing back a little of the sun’s light that she loves.
Kazuo Ishiguro, Nobel Prize in Literature in 2017, published “Klara and the Sun” in 2021, thus well before today his outlook on an Artificial Intelligence that keeps us company became a reality (even if for now ours is not self-propelled: we’re almost there!). The rights to the cinematic adaptation, as is often the case, were acquired even before publication, but it was only in 2023 that it was announced that the film would be handled by Taika Waititi, fresh from the witty Chi segna vince. Having become famous for her portrayal of Wednesday in the Netflix series of the same name, Jenna Ortega has long been tapping into Hollywood’s more fantastical and gothic side, especially after taking part in Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice revival. Recently she has starred in Death of a Unicorn, and we will see her again alongside Glen Powell in The Great Beyond.
