Lanterns has shone like the Green Lantern ring at its HBO and HBO Max debut. According to Warner Bros. Discovery, in the first three days of availability, the new DC Studios series drew 9.3 million global viewers and 6.6 million in the United States. In terms of streaming, it is one of the five best openings ever on HBO Max.
Lanterns off to a strong start on HBO Max
Based on the stories and characters from the famous DC Comics Green Lantern graphic novel, with its early episodes, Lanterns has surpassed the viewership of several HBO flagship series, including the recent IT: Welcome to Derry, the fourth season of True Detective, and the previous live-action DC series The Penguin. These are titles that have enjoyed great audience and critical acclaim, which means Lanterns is already on track to do just as well and perhaps secure a renewal for a second season.
Also atop the daily ranking of HBO Max’s 10 most-watched titles since its debut last Sunday (this is not the case in Italy, where House of the Dragon Season 3 continues to hold its own), Lanterns is set in Nebraska, in the town of Rushville, where Hal Jordan, a veteran of the Green Lantern Corps, the first human to join it and now a legend but also a man weary and haunted by his past, finds himself investigating a mysterious murder alongside John Stewart, a former Marine and a newly selected recruit to become the next Earth Green Lantern. At first glance it seems like a routine local crime case, but elements quickly emerge that are anything but ordinary: the case is tied to something much larger and involves the very mythology of the Lanterns.
