It’s not true that audiences have grown tired of superhero stories. They were simply waiting for someone to tell them in a different way. On HBO and HBO Max, Lanterns continues to be a success, the new DC Studios series based on the characters from the Green Lantern comic. The third episode, released last weekend, registered an average of 10 million viewers worldwide and 7 million viewers in the United States in the first three days of availability, according to data provided by the network. This marks the best result to date.
Lanterns Continues to Grow in Viewership
Lanterns is now among the top five most successful series in HBO Max’s history, and it represents the best-ever debut for a DC Studios series on the streaming service. The service also notes that the first episode has been watched worldwide by over 20 million viewers to date, surpassing the fourth season of True Detective (17.5 million) and another acclaimed DC series on the platform, The Penguin (19.8 million).
The third episode, titled OutKast, delves into the past of John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and his long period of preparation and training — under the guidance of his parents — to one day inherit the Green Lantern role from Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler). Over the course of the hour, John is put to the test by one of the Guardians (portrayed in human form by Laura Linney) to assess whether he is worthy of replacing Hal. Through various flashbacks, we see how his father, John Stewart Sr. (J. Alphonse Nicholson), and his mother, Bernadette (Jasmine Cephas Jones), trained him not to be afraid.
