Viewership has been strong and critics have praised it as well. It should be sufficient to order a second season, and yet it is not. There is a precise reason Lanterns has not yet been renewed by HBO, even though the first season has now ended. This was revealed by DC Studios co-president Peter Safran, adding that a decision in either direction should arrive “by the end of the year,” after carefully evaluating a fundamental aspect.
Lanterns: what does the renewal for a second season depend on?
In an interview with Collider, Safran explained that a possible second season of Lanterns would need to measure up to the first, which had a debut and execution of great success. “If we manage to conceive what we deem to be a worthy follow-up to a first season so loved and of high quality, it will be this that determines the production of a second season,” the executive producer said.
Lanterns has been hailed as one of the best DC productions in recent years and the best from DC Studios to date. The audience’s enthusiasm, however, has been more restrained, with some disappointed by the scarcity of cosmic spectacle and the limited use of the Lantern powers. The main reason for the praise is that Lanterns is not merely a superhero series: it leans into a police investigation, the personal conflicts between Hal Jordan and John Stewart, and an adult tone, close to that of a television thriller.
Safran added that the most gratifying aspect of the first season’s success was seeing the Green Lantern franchise return to the center of cultural discussion. Especially for DC, a series is not just a series. It must have an impact on other media, helping to strengthen the entire narrative universe and revive characters who for years remained on the margins of popular imagination and even of sales compared with other flagship titles of the publisher. In this sense, Lanterns represents a particularly significant result, because it managed to rekindle interest in a brand that still bore the weight of the 2011 film’s failure, restoring it credibility and a new centrality within the DC Universe.
The success of the series moreover demonstrates how important it is for DC Studios to value their characters through productions capable of distinguishing themselves for narrative quality and stylistic identity, going beyond mere superhero entertainment. The return of Green Lantern to public discourse could thus foster new opportunities for the franchise, both on the small and the big screen, consolidating the links between different productions and paving the way for future stories in the DC Universe. But Safran clarified that the renewal will depend on the writers’ ability to develop a follow-up equal to the first chapter, without settling for simply replicating its success.
