This winter, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit will take a stroll down memory lane. Stephanie March, a familiar face of the legal drama seen in nearly a hundred episodes, the last of which aired in 2018, will reprise the role of Alexandra ‘Alex’ Cabot in the ninth episode of the show’s twenty-eighth season. The circumstances that will reunite her with Olivia Benson (played by Mariska Hargitay) are being kept strictly secret, but nostalgic fans will be pleased to learn that her return will follow that of another iconic figure, Elliot Stabler, portrayed by Christopher Meloni. Both had played pivotal roles in Alex’s past.
Alex Cabot Returns to Law & Order: Special Victims Unit: What Happened the Last Time?
March had left Law & Order: Special Victims Unit during season five, when her character—then the District Attorney’s Assistant—was targeted by a drug cartel she had been prosecuting. After the cartel staged what looked like a successful attack against her, Cabot was presumed dead. But Benson and Stabler uncovered that the whole incident had been staged to allow her to enter the Witness Protection Program.
Cabot later returned to testify against the person who had tried to kill her, rejoining the Special Victims Unit. Subsequently, she left the role to work with an organization that helps women who have suffered abuse build lives away from their abusers. Her last appearance dates back to the nineteenth episode of season 19, when she briefly returned to assist a woman who had become a victim of domestic violence at the hands of her husband to disappear. In that moment, Benson had urged the victim to testify against the man instead of continuing to hide, but the situation ended tragically: Jules had died in a suspicious car accident and Nick, her husband, had managed to gain custody of their daughter. We had left Cabot deeply frustrated, convinced that Olivia had not been able to protect Jules. The two, however, had parted with mutual respect and affection.
