A day of major announcements for Netflix’s English original productions. Following the early renewal of the action dramedy The Gentlemen for a third season, the streaming service has also confirmed Legends, the crime thriller starring Steve Coogan, three months after its debut on the platform.
Legends: What the TV series is about
Created by Neil Forsyth (The Gold) and drawing inspiration from a true story, Legends is set in Britain in the early 1990s, a period when drug trafficking, and especially heroin, is causing a national emergency. British customs authorities, unable to effectively counter criminal organisations with traditional methods, decide to try something extremely risky. A secret team of customs officials is formed—ordinary people with no real experience as undercover agents. Briefly trained, these men and women are given new identities and are introduced into the criminal milieu with the aim of infiltrating from within some of the most dangerous British drug-trafficking gangs.
Coogan portrays Don, one of the operation’s members, while Tom Burke plays Guy, a young customs officer involved in the perilous mission. The team must quickly learn to behave like real criminals: crafting a credible backstory, earning the traffickers’ trust, and taking part in smuggling operations without getting exposed. The series explores the psychological weight of the double identity, with the protagonists coming to question the boundary between the person they truly are and the one they portray undercover.
