The audience is eagerly awaiting a third season of Big Little Lies – Small Big Lies, and even more so after the release of the paperback sequel by Liane Moriarty titled Big Little Truths. Yet it was the author herself who recently explained why she has no intention of getting involved in the TV series production.
Big Little Lies, Liane Moriarty explains why she does not want to be involved in the making of season 3
Apparently, Liane Moriarty plans to enjoy the show just like any fan of Big Little Lies. The author has, in fact, revealed that she is not interested in the development process of the third season. In a talk with The Hollywood Reporter, she clarified the reason: “I’ve learned from my adaptations that whenever I join meetings or similar things, at first I think, ‘Okay, we can make some changes.’ I know it’s a different medium, I feel collaborative, and I enjoy teamwork. But then we move forward and a problem arises, and I think, ‘Well, you’d have to leave everything as it was in the book, because I had already solved it beforehand.’ If you stay true to the novel, everything will be resolved. But in reality you shouldn’t do that. So I just have to enjoy it like any other viewer.”
At first Moriarty didn’t intend to write a sequel to Big Little Lies, but it happened anyway and she promptly flagged HBO: “I told them, ‘I’ll write this story, but I don’t want to hear your opinions; I’ll simply give you the manuscript and you can do with it as you wish.’ They were very understanding, even though they kept saying, ‘Hurry up, hurry up, the child actors are growing up’ and so on.” To accommodate those demands, the author broke her own rules: “Usually I never let my editors see anything during the process. But this time I showed it to them because I wasn’t fast enough. But I didn’t ask for feedback. I didn’t want to hear lines like: ‘This isn’t for us.’”
The sequel Big Little Truths offers a time jump relative to the first novel, so the third season should follow the same blueprint, justifying any potential growth of the characters. In any case Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon, the producers and leads, have confessed to remaining interested in the TV series. We’ll see what happens next.
