Despite HBO not yet confirming the third season or the release date of Big Little Lies – Piccole grandi bugie, the new novel by Liane Moriarty—titled Big Little Truths and released on August 25—could be the turning point we’ve all been waiting for. As the author herself has stated, this literary sequel, set ten years after the events of the first novel—from which the 2017 TV series is derived, later followed by a second season in 2019 with Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, and Shailene Woodley—represents the perfect material for the plot of the series’ new chapter. But the question now naturally arises: what will happen to the protagonists?
Big Little Lies, Liane Moriarty’s new novel foreshadows the plot of the third season
In Moriarty’s new novel, the lives of Madeline, Jane, Celeste, Renata, and Bonnie are picked up ten years after the events of the first book. The protagonists are now dealing with teenage children, who themselves confront the intricate phase of growing up; yet the past returns to knock at their doors in an unexpected way, forcing them to confront what they have up to now kept hidden from their children.
The story, told from the mothers’ perspective, alternates between moments in which the months before a crucial event are described: the ‘D-Day’. This turns out to be the day when Ziggy, Jane’s son, and his classmates deliver a presentation that reveals the true intentions of their new history teacher, Melody. Through this presentation, the mothers discover that Melody was grooming young people, selecting the brightest and offering them job opportunities that, in reality, led them straight into the arms of her husband, Seth Montclair.
Later it is revealed that the finger sent to the school principal belonged to Ewan Drew, a local resident who was already deceased. To draw the attention of the school and the community to Melody’s actions, a cremation worker had detached it from the deceased’s body, and subsequently Clara Long, a former student of the teacher, had sent it to the principal.
The intrigues and mysteries of Moriarty’s new novel seem, therefore, to be the perfect springboard for the third season of Big Little Lies. Although HBO has not yet confirmed filming or a release date, the twist comes with the inclusion in the team of Francesca Sloane, chosen to sign the screenplay for the first episode. In other words, the groundwork for a new chapter of the series is all in place, but we will certainly have to wait a little longer to uncover all the secrets of the five women of Monterey!
