Live-Action Invasion at D23: Tangled, Lilo & Stitch 2, and Oswald Defy Expectations

There’s no slowing Disney this August. The annual D23 event has been decisive about the company’s future, promising projects of all kinds for the remainder of the decade. Of course, its brightest section has been animation, where they showcased ten films that will hit theaters, but there is a field not covered by that section and that remains one of the most popular in the current industry: live action.

This year’s presentation has left us with several projects Disney has in the works. We have plans of every kind, from films that reimagine classic titles to series in which forgotten protagonists of the company demand the screen.

Classics and Sequels

Attendees at D23 were able to see in exclusive first footage the live-action version of ‘Tangled’, with Teagan Croft and Milo Manheim presenting shots from the filming sets in Spain. After a few seconds of a teaser to leave us wanting more, they confirmed the film’s release date for March 2028, so we’ll have to wait a little longer.

The other feature that captured everyone’s attention was the sequel to ‘Lilo & Stitch’, which wowed theaters last year. Not long ago they confirmed that Stitch himself would be directing the movie, but no details were shared about its direction. Now we have a clue: Angel, Stitch’s friend in the animated series and potential love interest, will be part of the plot. The Experiment 624 will conquer movie screens in summer 2028.

The Return of Oswald

The surprises had only just begun after catching a glimpse of the extraterrestrial’s ears. The biggest bomb was the appearance of Mickey Mouse’s elder brother. The Lucky Rabbit will star in ‘Oswald the Lucky Rabbid’, a three-episode mini-series bringing the charming animal into the real world, headed by Jon Favreau. It will be available to Disney+ subscribers in February 2027.

And finally, though it diverges somewhat from the company’s usual formula, Disney has released a small teaser and a release date for the third season of ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’. Jackson’s adventures will take us to new territories on November 20, 2026.
