Premiering on Disney+ in 2026, Love Story is an anthology TV series that began with John Fitzgerald Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette. The first season thus told the troubled love story between John Fitzgerald Kennedy Jr., son of the former United States president of the same name, and Carolyn Bessette, the latter portrayed by Sarah Pidgeon. Their romance is one that ends in tragedy, as has been recalled for years, and one scene in particular continues to torment the actress to this day, as she recently revealed.
Love Story, Sarah Pidgeon reveals which scene left the strongest impression on her and why
As is likely the case for many fans, Sarah Pidgeon cannot shake Love Story from her mind, and specifically one scene from the penultimate episode of the first season. It has continued to haunt her since filming ended and remains vividly etched in her memory. In an interview with Vogue Singapore, the actress confessed: “Various scenes keep popping into my head. I particularly enjoyed the filming of Episode 8, which unfolds entirely in their apartment. Our director, Jesse Peretz, had the idea of exploring the passage of time through a series of brief scenes of Carolyn at home.”
The scene in question follows Carolyn pacing the elegant Tribeca loft she shared with JKF Jr., smoking cigarettes and staring into space, while Smoke Rings plays in the background. The scene serves to underscore how alone Carolyn feels: “Discovering new parts of the apartment we had never seen before and finding a different physicality to convey her feeling of being trapped was an innovative way to enter the mindset needed to begin that episode. I also find the shots beautiful, with a lot of stillness,” the actress admitted. In the eighth episode referenced by Sarah Pidgeon, Carolyn cannot leave the house because she is suffocated by all the media attention toward her, and by the insistence of the paparazzi who follow her wherever she goes.
In another part of the interview, Sarah Pidgeon also described how she reacted when she learned she had landed the role for Love Story: “Absolute silence, caused by shock. I understood the magnitude and weight of Carolyn’s legacy and I wanted to do her justice. I was understandably frightened and nervous about accepting that role, but also motivated by the opportunity to try to understand who she was, as much as possible in that context. I deeply admire what she managed to achieve and live in her life, and having the chance to embody such an extraordinary woman was an incredible gift. You always hope that some positive aspects of all the roles you play stay with you, but this was a unique experience, and I don’t know if I’ll ever relive it,” she concluded.
