M. Night Shyamalan has decided to change course for at least a while, or at least to pair his directing career with that of a… YouTuber. You heard right: the director of The Sixth Sense and Split will launch his own YouTube channel, something he is thrilled about, as he himself stated in a video posted on X, saying he cannot imagine what effect it will have on fans and how he will appear to those who watch him but he is full of enthusiasm.
Sitting on a wooden bench in a garden, in the video the director has a good-natured air and a casual-chic look that we like very much: white shirt, yellow tie and sneakers. Like in an actor’s self-tape, M. Night introduces himself to the online crowd:

As a good director, Shyamalan oversaw the video’s editing, inserting footage from the sets of his films: moments where he asks actors to repeat a scene, compliments them or bursts into laughter.
The career of M. Night Shyamalan, a filmmaker of rare intelligence, skill and originality, has always been somewhat uneven, as many of you will recall. The Sixth Sense, which is his third feature, enjoyed tremendous success. Unbreakable also did well, as did Signs, while the subsequent The Village, although it grossed a decent amount, drew mixed reviews. Then came The Legend? Lady in the Water (Lady in the Water), which disappointed the director’s fans and was, unfortunately, a flop for us. The subsequent The Happening, The Last Airbender and After Earth were even panned, to the extent that many wondered what had happened to a writer who seemed so promising. After the disappointing The Visit, Shyamalan suddenly climbed back to the crest thanks to Split, in which a stellar James McAvoy portrayed a man suffering from a severe form of dissociative identity disorder with as many as 23 personalities. The horror thriller drew an enormous number of moviegoers, grossing globally 278 million dollars from a budget of 9 million. In 2019 the sequel Glass arrived, and then Old came out, which did not garner high acclaim, and Knock at the Cabin, which, while not disappointing critics, did not win over the public. The director’s latest film is Trap, which for us is certainly a yes, also because it brought Josh Hartnett back into the spotlight. At present he is overseeing the post-production of Remain, an adaptation of the eponymous Nicholas Sparks novel with Jake Gyllenhaal and Phoebe Dynevor.
