With a plot twist perfectly aligned with his cinema philosophy, the screenwriter and director M. Night Shyamalan “takes the stage” live in a theater, stunning the audience even before the film starts.
As part of the Beyond Fest 2026 in Los Angeles, the audience had entered the cinema to attend a screening of The Sixth Sense, one of the highlights of the festival’s major retrospective Night Visions: The Shock and Awe of M. Night Shyamalan, organized to revisit 27 years and 12 feature films by the director. Shyamalan instead stepped in front of the audience to announce that he would instead present Remain, in Italian Rimani ancora, his new film, thus delivering its world premiere more than four months ahead of its theatrical release.
Remain: reaction positive a quattro mesi dall’uscita
The choice is even more significant considering that Remain will not arrive in U.S. theatres before February 5, 2027, distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. The film was originally slated for October 23, 2026, before the studio moved its release to the Valentine’s Day window, a period particularly suited to its unusual blend of romance and supernatural thriller. The surprise screening thus turned an evening dedicated to one of Shyamalan’s greatest career successes into the first public opportunity to glimpse his new work.
Initial public reactions following the screening were largely positive, with praise directed in particular at Jake Gyllenhaal, the chemistry with Phoebe Dynevor, the cinematography and the score by James Newton Howard. Some attendees described the film as romantic, funny, and at the same time scary and melancholic, while others highlighted Hitchcockian influences and the emotional resonance with the director’s early works.
Jake Gyllenhaal e Phoebe Dynevor in una storia d’amore soprannaturale
Remain is born from the collaboration between Shyamalan and Nicholas Sparks, the author of romantic bestsellers such as The Notebook. The two developed the story and characters together, then took parallel paths: Sparks adapted it into a novel, while Shyamalan wrote and directed the cinematic version.
The lead is Jake Gyllenhaal as Tate, an architect who arrives in Cape Cod in an attempt to restart his life and meets the mysterious Wren, played by Phoebe Dynevor. What initially appears to be a love story gradually takes on supernatural overtones, blending Sparks’s romantic landscape with the mystery and suspense characteristic of Shyamalan. The cast also includes Julie Hagerty, Ashley Walters, Tracy Ifeachor, Hannah James, Caleb Ruminer, Kieran Mulcare and Maria Dizzia.
