Since Halloween is now more for shops and for kids, it’s not particularly surprising that Victorian Psycho, a horror that’s a bit campy but also, in its own way, disturbing and quite bloody, finally makes its debut in American theaters in a week, on November 13.
Presented at the Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section last May, the film features Maika Monroe (the star of It Follows and Longlegs) in the role of a character who — as the title also suggests — could have stepped straight out of a Jane Austen novel if Austen had also dealt with psychopathy and assorted mental disturbances. We are in 1858, in England, when an eccentric girl named Winifred Notty arrives at Ensor House, the secluded residence of a lord of the manor, to serve as governess to the master’s children. Soon one will realize that Winifred is not merely eccentric, but completely mad, and bloodthirsty (and perhaps even driven by revenge: but against whom?).
Adapted from the eponymous novel by Virginia Feito, published in Italy by Mercurio Books, the film was directed by Zachary Wigon, the director of Sanctuary, and besides the unleashed Monroe whom you can see in action in the final trailer of Victorian Psycho below, the cast also includes Jason Isaacs, Ruth Wilson and Thomasin McKenzie.
At present, no one plans to distribute the film in our country.
